Lower back pain exercise is very essential to relieve the lower back pain. Lower back pain can result from many conditions and causes. Moving ankles up and down slowly, bending and straightening knee at least 10 times

With one knee bent, lift leg straight above about 6 to 12 inches above the ground and holding this position for 1 to 1.5 second and then lower the leg slowly repeating it for about 10 times,

Pull the leg up, straighten up and stretch one leg at a time by holding on to a towel wrapped behind the foot


While leaning against a wall with both feet at least 12 inches away from the wall keeping abdominal muscles tight slowly bend both the knees 450 for 5 seconds and returning them slowly in to upright position and repeating it 10 times.

Standing on both the feet and slowly raising heels up and down at least 10 times,

Hamstring exercise also relieves the lower back pain, but the commonest lower back pain exercise is to bend forward with legs kept straight trying to touch the toes and remaining in that position for sometime.


Exercise on a stationary bike and a tread mill for 20 to 30 minutes.


Sitting on a chair and placing both the legs straight on to another chair in front try to touch your toes while bending forward.

Back pain is the most common and recurrent type of pain in America and 80% of Americans will experience it sometime in their life time. A new study shows that for every year a person has back pain, their brain shrinks 10-20 years of normal aging. It’s the second reason for doctor visits. Not to sound like the prophet of doom, but if you have had back pain in your life you have a really good chance of it coming back to bother you again and again. What will you do? Back pain can come from many causes and it’s important to figure out what the cause is before trying any treatment. The right treatment at the wrong time is still the wrong treatment.

Common causes of back pain that I see are disc issues, stenosis, arthritis, degenerative joint/disc disease, post surgical pain and nerve pain. New studies are showing that conservative pain care like spinal manipulation, acupuncture, nutrition, herbs and lifestyle can dramatically help these conditions feel better.

Like I tell my patients, what helps one person with back pain doesn’t help another. That’s why we need to try as many things as possible and it might be a combination of things that gets the result you are looking for. You need to keep looking. If you stop at one or two things you might be suffering needlessly.

Manipulation for back pain has been shown effective, for some people this is also true if they have had pain for years or have not tried manipulation. A certain type of traction has been shown to be helpful for back and leg pain. In fact in about 75 quality studies on manipulation all found it now less effective than anything else and some showed it more effective than exercise, medication, acupuncture and massage. If you haven’t tried manipulation then you need to try it. If you had a bad experience with it then try another at least one more time. It doesn’t help everyone but it’s worth a try.

I just said manipulation was better than acupuncture but now I’m going to tell you that acupuncture helps acute low back pain and might help chronic low back pain. I’ve definitely seen both. There are many forms of acupuncture, some more aggressive than others. I do the aggressive kind because I see good result with it. That just my opinion. Acupuncture should be tried for both types of back pain.

Vitamin D, Fish oils, devils claw and white willow have all recently been shown to help back pain. Many of these herbs and supplements are as good as or better than NSAIDS. And who would have though Vitamin D would help back pain. Many people with low back pain are deficient in Vitamin D and in several good international studies it show great benefit. It also showed to be helpful in fibromyalgia and slowing arthritis but that’s another Second Opinion.

The Five Key Stages of Sleep

You may have heard the terms NREM ( Non Rapied Eye Movement) and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) used when describing sleep patterns. NREM accounts for around 75% of the sleep cycle in adults and 50% in infants.

NREM is often the most restful and also when the body’s functions such as metabolism and blood pressure are reduced. The majority of dreams occur in the more active phase i.e. the REM cycle.

Stage One

Backpain and ESI are related to each other in that the latter is very often used to find out the true cause of the former. Back ache is a common phenomenon and is generally a result of a strain or injury to the muscles and ligaments supporting the human spine. An Epidural Steroid Injection or ESI is the most common type of injection given to patients suffering from back and neck pain. The pain in the back can be constant or intermittent and its intensity may vary from a dull ache to a searing feeling.

In a large number of cases, back pain vanishes or can be cured within a few weeks. However, in cases of chronic pain, medical advice is necessary. Patients having difficulty in passing urine or experiencing numbness in the back or genital area or weakness and pain in the legs or feeling unsteady while standing should see a physician immediately. Spinal injections are often used to find out the true cause of the back pain and than to actually treat the pain. Injections which provide temporary relief are called therapeutic injections. In other cases spinal injections are used to diagnose the cause of the back pain. ESI is generally injection used to treat back pain.

The space between the covering of the spinal cord and the inside of the bony spinal canal is called the epidural space. An injection in this area ensures that the medication moves across the whole of the spine and covers all the nerve routs and joints to relieve the back pain. ESIs are generally very effective in the treatment and the true diagnosis of the back pain.

In most of the cases where spinal injections are used, a local anesthetic called lidocaine is used. Lidocaine is a fast acting drug and its effects wear off in a couple of hours. So it is generally used as a diagnostic tool. Bupivacaine, another anesthetic is used to provide some relief from the back pain. Another commonly used injection is Cortisone. Cortisone is commonly injected with a local anesthetic to reduce inflammation in the affected areas of the patient suffering from severe back pain.

An epidural steroid injection or ESI can be injected in three different ways. In the first case a caudal block is placed through the sacral gap which is the space below our lumbar spine. Than the injection is placed into the epidural space. This type of block reduces the chances of puncturing the dura.

The most common method of giving an ESI to reduce back pain is the translumbar approach. Under this method the needle is placed between vertebrae from the back. The third method is generally used for diagnostic purposes. The transforaminal approach involves injection of the medication around a specific nerve root to find out the exact problem area. The foraminae are small openings between your vertebrae through which the nerve roots exit the spinal canal and enter the body.

Spinal injections should not be used in the case of patients taking a platelet-inhibiting drug, such as aspirin or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
